It also functions as socio-political representation of interest and umbrella organisation. It is therefore an expert and critical counterpart to legislators, government and administration in order to improve the living conditions of disabled people and their families.

Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft der Integrationsämter und Hauptfürsorgestellen (BIH) GbR 

There is an integration office in each federal state of Germany, which has the task to support and secure employment for people with disabilities. Among other things, the integration office needs to agree before a disabled employee can be dismissed by the employer, due to the specific dismissal protection for people with disabilities. The integration offices are financed through the countervailing charge (DE: Ausgleichsabgabe), which needs to be paid by companies with less than 5% of employees with disabilities.
